Penny Spencer, Managing Director of Spencer Travel and founder of the TIME mentoring program, has been recognised with the first-ever Legendary Contribution to Travel award at the 25th annual btTB (Business Travel by Travel Bulletin) Gala Dinner in Sydney.

In a surprise moment during the prestigious event, btTB unveiled a new award category created solely to acknowledge Spencer’s enduring impact on the travel industry. This unique honour was introduced based on widespread support from both corporate travel buyers and suppliers, who nominated Spencer for her remarkable influence over nearly four decades in the sector.

“I was deeply moved by this recognition,” said Spencer following the announcement.

“TIME is very close to my heart. It began as a simple desire to give back and has grown into something truly special. I’m proud of every mentor, every mentee, and the community we’ve built together.”

Spencer’s career spans nearly 40 years and is distinguished by her leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the travel community. The award particularly recognises her contributions through the TIME (Travel Industry Mentor Experience) program, which she founded 16 years ago to support mentorship and professional development across the Australian travel industry.

Since its inception, TIME has mentored over 400 emerging professionals, offering them guidance, real-world insights, and personal support from senior leaders. The program has become a cornerstone of professional growth within the sector, and Spencer’s ongoing leadership continues to inspire transformation across the industry.

The btTB Gala is known for celebrating excellence in corporate travel, typically presenting just two honours each year: Legendary Travel Buyer and Legendary Travel Supplier. Spencer’s award marks a historic first — the introduction of a third category, acknowledging an individual whose contributions go beyond traditional industry roles.
