Hurtigruten’s battery hybrid powered expedition cruise ship MS Roald Amundsen has made history, exploring waters further south than any Hurtigruten ship has ever been in the Norwegian expedition cruise line’s 127 years of history.

Polar cruise specialist, Hurtigruten, has unveiled a collection of expeditions to the Caribbean and Central and South America, offering adventurous guests new sustainable expedition cruises to the tropics. In 2021, Hurtigruten will offer its largest ever selection of voyages in non-polar waters – presenting a wide range of unique experiences by small custom-build expedition ships.

Cruisers are seeking far-flung, pristine destinations in 2020, driven by a desire for immersion in each location, according to global luxury travel network Virtuoso. The network recently unveiled its cruise trends for the year in time for ‘wave season,’ occurring January through March, when savvy travellers book voyages to benefit from special incentives.

The Norwegian government this month has revealed plans to potentially introduce heavy oil bans and limit the capacity of permitted ships to the archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean.

Hurtigruten has named polar pioneer Karin Strand as godmother to the world’s first hybrid powered cruise ship, MS Roald Amundsen. The naming is set to take place 8 November 2019 during MS Roald Amundsen’s maiden voyage to the white continent. She will be the first ship in history to be named in Antarctica.

Guests of Hurtigruten will be able to experience a new eco-friendly snowmobile solution this winter, eSleds. Under the partnership struck by Hurtigruten’s land division, Hurtigruten Svalbard, and Finnish startup company, Aurora Powertrains, guests will be able to experience a “new era” of silent and emission-free snowmobiling.

Hurtigruten is offering adventurous guests the choice between brand-new expedition cruises to handpicked ports on revamped ships that are also retrofitted for green hybrid propulsion, or environmentally friendly classic coastal cruises to all 34 ports from Bergen to Kirkenes during Hurtigruten’s 2021 season.
