This week heralds a new and significant era for Viking. The Norwegian founded cruise line is expanding its unique luxury product, embarking for the first time on a series of ocean cruises from China, commencing today, Monday 9 September 2024.
To spread the word, Viking is staging a global media event, inviting a large contingent of travel writers from around the world on the inaugural sailing – a 10-night Discover China voyage from Shanghai to Hong Kong.
LATTE is proud to have been asked to join the cruise which will be aboard the all-veranda 930-passenger, Yi Dun (formerly Viking Sun), that will be dedicated exclusively to the route.

In a pre-recorded video address, Viking Vice President Karine Hagen, daughter of Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen stated: “Instead of cruising through the heartland on a river cruise we will be sailing along the coastline of China and become the very first to explore rarely seen destinations, visiting six ports to which Viking has exclusive access”.
“Beginning in Shanghai, they include: Zhoushan and Dongtou in the East China Sea. Pingtan in the northern Taiwan Strait and Xiamen, the most famous island city in China, and finally Shenzhen, (Hong Kong)”.
“There will be immersive experiences for our guests, giving them the opportunity to meet the people and discover the history and rich culture of this fascinating land.”
“Like all of our offerings, there will be fully-escorted tours and an included excursion in every port, and plenty of time to explore for those who wish to set out on their own.”
Viking will offer three itineraries of varying lengths. As well as the core 10-day Discover China, there is a 15-day Classic China including Beijing, the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Xian with its Terracotta Warriors, plus the longest itinerary – a 20-day Wonders of China combining Chengdu and the Pandas, as well as extraordinary Tibet.

In addition there will be for the first time a new ‘Spirit of Mongolia’ program; a five-night fully guided pre or post extension, a highlight that will see guests stay three-nights at the award-winning Three Camel Eco-Lodge in the famed Gobi Desert.
Hagen said, “Viking Yi Dun will offer the same impeccable service and delicious cuisine found on all of our award-winning small ships, so you’ll be sure to be exploring China in the utmost comfort.”
“We have been licensed to operate eight such departures in 2024, and we are not sure if we will have this opportunity again”.
Viking’s entry into China ocean cruising couldn’t be more timely since the country is now allowing visa-free entry for Australian tourists and business travellers for up to 15-days, which came into effect on 1 July 2024.
